Trend Report: In an Indigo Mood

Color stories tend to come and go, but there’s one hue that has been at the top of many product designer’s lists for at least two seasons: indigo. From home décor to personal accessories and giftables, the indigo trend is going strong and shows no sign of abating.

A halfway tone between blue and violet, indigo has a long history of use in textiles, dating back to prehistoric India, and later to ancient Greece and Rome, where it was a sought-after extravagance for the wealthy.

Of its current application in décor and accessories, Joan Osofsky, owner of Hammertown décor and gift stores in Pine Plains and Rhinebeck, New York, and Great Barrington, Massachusetts, says, “Indigo is luxurious. It has a very lush, vintage feel that makes it appealing to a wide range of customers. People are tired of all the grays that were popularized by stores like Restoration Hardware, and there’s an interest in bringing back color. Indigo is rich, beautiful alternative to paler blues, or a more classic shade like navy.”

Indigo is certainly having a moment. From the high end to the mass market, virtually every brick-and-mortar and online store is carrying a range of products—notebooks and journals, table linens, tote bags and cosmetic cases, jewelry, and more—in this distinctive hue. “When you see Target and other mass-market retailers doing it, you know it’s a big trend,” says Osofsky.

Currently, Hammertown carries sofas, pillows, throws, scarves, and ceramic bowls in indigo. For fall and winter, Osofsky prefers to merchandise it as an accent color with neutral products—for example, an indigo throw and pillows with a bed dressed in sand and ivory tones. For smaller items, like serving ware, she groups the indigo items together into vignettes, to give the hue its own showcase.

Indigo is an equally male- and female-friendly color, making it perfect for shared holiday host and hostess gifts, and seems to draw all ages, from preschool to the golden years. And with a larger range of products, like kitchenware, tablet cases, laptop totes, home accents, T-shirts, and more it’s easier than ever to find spirited, colorful gifts for everyone on your shopping list.
